"An intermediary space between business
and government where private energy can be deployed for public
good.” ~J. Joseph~
“Third Sector” is a term that has been coined to denote a very
important part of the global economy. If you think of the
economy as a whole, and remove the Public Sector (government)
and the Business Sector (for-profit), then everything that’s
left is the Third Sector. The third sector is a conglomerate
of diverse organisations and is often referred to as the
“Not-For-Profit Sector," or the “Social Economy.”

It has been estimated that there are approximately 700,000 of
these organisations in Australia. The contribution of third
sector organisations is substantial but very difficult to
measure; it has been estimated that the sector provides around
7.2% of employment and 3.3% of GDP. To put that into
perspective, the turnover of our third sector organisations has
exceeded that of Australia’s mining industry, and accounts for
an expenditure equivalent to the governments of New South Wales
and Victoria combined. (Lyons, M. 2001)
The impact of third sector organisations on our communities and society can not be overstated.
